A great coffee travel mug is a necessity when you need to go somewhere with your coffee, tea or hot chocolate. There are a great variety of travel mugs available, but you should consider these tips before your big purchase. Coffee mugs designed for travel are usually stainless steel or plastic, but I have seen rather adorable ceramic travel mugs as well. Plastic is by far the cheapest of the three.

A stainless steel coffee mug will be more expensive than a plastic one, the benefits far outweigh the cost in this situation. The reason for that is because a plastic cup will always be the first to break and it is a pretty poor comparison to stainless steel when considering keeping temperatures at their optimum.

The stainless steel coffee cup will keep your tea or coffee hot for approximately thirty to sixty minutes. They are also used to keep your drinks cold if that is your desire, but either way you should try to find one that offers double walled insulation. Another benefit to picking stainless steel is that it is much easier to clean and keep clean than plastic. The plastic version will eventually absorb the coffee, tea or hot chocolate. This absorption will lead to making all your beverages taste different and then you have to go and buy a new mug anyway!

If I have not convinced you yet and you still prefer a plastic coffee mug, then at least buy one that has an inner wall made of stainless steel. This just may be the "bee's knees" because the plastic outside will never be too hot or cold to grasp and the inside will maintain the desired temperature.

Another consideration is if you prefer your travel cup to have a large round bottom for stabilization or if you want it to fit in your car's cup holder. A travel mug that fits snug in your cup holder has the advantage of being a hands free travel mug, otherwise you should go with the mug that has a large bottom so you can at least sit it on the seat next to you. Your best option if you go with the wide bottom is to find one with a no-slip surface. The last thing you want is your hot cocoa flying around in your car if you let go of it.

The next consideration would be your travel mug lid. There are two types of lids: the snap on variety and the screw on type. Screw lids are the best safety option because once on they are not coming off. The plastic lids have the potential of coming off if they are tipped over or dropped. You might also want to think about the drinking hole and if you prefer one that is covered, not covered, one that slides over for you to drink or one that flips up.

It does not matter what your choices are because they are you choices alone unless the travel mug is being purchased for gift, then it would be wise to consider their tastes. Find your perfect mug at retailers nationwide or on the Internet.
